phpShop was first released on February 15, 2000 which eventually has become VirtueMart. The original developers of phpShop simply wanted to learn how to use PHP and decided that building an e-commerce application was the best way to learn. After much fiddling around, phpShop was born... hence Virtue Mart was born after a crew of more experienced developers took over.
